Word Journal 2003

The 2003 issue of Word Journal features work from of today's finest poets, including Kevin Bezner, Denise Duhamel, Beth Gylys, April Lindner, Shawn Sturgeon, David Swerdlow, and Sonny Williams, as well as the award-winning chapbook "The Illinois Letters" by Ryan G. Van Cleave and "Duende," a prizewinning poem by Victoria Dorshorn. Finally, the issue features a review by Kevin Walzer of four emerging poets.

In “The Illinois Letters,” Van Cleave speaks in the voices of poets such as Carl Sandburg and Donald Hall. Through these poets, he takes readers through landscapes that include a junkyard and a dark velvet night. In “Duende,” Dorshorn takes readers to the 79th floor of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. “Watching,” she writes, “I prayed for your safety, and waited.”

Word Journal is published annually by Word Press. Each issue includes the winning entries of contests for chapbooks and individual poems, as well as poems by other authors, reviews, and interviews.
